Teaching procedures
I. Revision
Get Ss to have a dialogue like the one in Part 2 of Lesson 52, in pairs, with their books shut. Pay attention to the intonation.
II. Presentation
1) Ask the Ss : “do you know slaves?” “yes, I sure that you can learn more about slaves in your history class”. The teacher check them how much they know about this topic.
2) Teacher told to Ss the fact that slaves were caught in Africa and were taken to America where they were sold.
3) Teacher show some pictures on the Bb. Get Ss to talk about the picture and describe what they can see.
III. Reading
1) Teacher tall to Ss: “You are going to read a story about a man who lived in the eighteenth century. His name was Kunta. Read aloud the task and the two questions. ”
2) Before reading the passage let Ss read the questions over the passage, make sure Ss understand the questions.
3) Let the Ss read the text in several minute and write down the answers. Put them in pairs to discuss their answers, then check the answers in the class.
4) The answers to two questions: 1. He was caught in a forest in Africa, put in chains and sent by ship to .America. 2 About a third of the black people on the ship died during the journey.)
IV. Exercises
Go through the exercise 2 in page 80 and make sure the Ss know what to do. Let them read the whole passage carefully and answer the questions, working in pairs or small groups. Check the answers with the whole class.
V. Language points
the unknown 是“the +过去分词“结构”。在英语中,有些形容词可以加上定冠词the 来代表整个类别的人,或代表其抽象概念。
the blind=blind people 盲人 the unemployed =unemployed people 失业者
the beautiful=beautiful things 美的东西(抽象的)
2. “be born + adj./n.” “天生就是……”的意思。
He was born blind /deaf/ poor.
He was born a singer=He was a born singer.
3. Kunta had been seized in the forest and then hit on the head with a hard object.
“hit +sb. +on/in+ the +身体部位”是英语的习惯表达法,其中的定冠词不可用物主代词代替。
John hit him on the head/shoulder/ back.
John hit him in the face/eyes /right leg.
4. be held prisoner 在名词prisoner前不用冠词。例如:
He was held/kept prisoner on a small island.他被囚禁在一个小岛上。
He failed to run away and was taken prisoner.他没有逃跑得了,被俘了。
5. become of (人或事物的)结果,情况,遭遇。
I don’t know what will become of me when I am out of work.
What has become of the book I put here yesterday?
6. Worse was to come. 更糟的事就要发生了。
I have worse to tell you.
I am sorry to say that he is going from bad to worse.
The situation is getting worse and worse.
VI. Discussion
Get the Ss to discuss these questions in pairs or groups of four. Ask for some answers from the class at the end.
VII Listen and repeat
Play the tape of the passage for the Ss to listen and follow. Play the tape of part of the passage once more; this time the Ss listen and repeat. Pay attention to stress and intonation, and the sentence stress of longer sentences.
Homework
Read the passage again.
Finish off the Workbook exercises.
