Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revision
1) Ask Ss what they have learnt about Madame Cuie and the discovery of radium so far during this unit.
2) Or ask some questions about Madame Cuie to Ss.
Step 2 Presentation
1) Let Ss look at some pictures, and ask them what they can see
2) Teach new words
Step 3 Reading
1) Give Ss enough time to read the passage quickly to find the answer to this question:
what does radium do to the human body?(It can cure cancer and can cause aches, blindness and a disease of the blood)
2) Get Ss go though the passage again and answer some questions:
In what ways was Madame Curie honoured during her life?
Can you think of examples of her determination/ courage/ her willingness to share her knowledge?
Step 4 Language point
1) set off :出发(vi);引起,引爆/引发(vt)
e.g. 1. We'd better set off at 8 tomorrow morning.
2. A slight touch will set the bomb off.
3. Tom's speech set off a wave of anger.
set out 与set off 用法相似时,意为"出发,动身",另外,set out to do, set about doing 意为"着手去做…"
2) “主语+be+形容词+不定式”
e.g. She is easy to work with.
The man is always ready to help others.
3) heart and soul “全心全意”
e.g. Lei Feng was a good example of serving the people heart and soul.
