Lesson 30

  . Teaching aims:

  1.words and useful expressions:

  2. Revise the grammar: revise the tenses

  3. Get the students to understand this passage.

  . Teaching methods: Reading: skimming scanning and note taking.

  . Teaching procedures:

  Step 1. Revision

  (1) Check the homework exercises.

  (2) Revise the daily expressions in communication of Lesson 29.

  Step 2. Presentation

  Get the students to talk about the picture and ask what do they think happened in the story and where the story probably happened.

  Step 3. Reading  

  Now get the students to read the text and answer the following questions:

  ① What was the boy looking for and what was his problem?

  ② How many times did the boy fail to get a book?

  ③ How did the bookseller and the writer each offer to help the boy?

  ④ What did the boy say to the writer when he got some help from him?

  Step 4. Further reading

  Now get the students to read the text and choose the best answer to each question on P102 in the workbook. Do the work with the class.

  Read the passage on page 44 again and choose the best answers.

  Step 5. Comprehension

  SBP45, Part 2, tell the students to talk about the eight questions to have a deep understanding of the text. The students are divided into groups of four to choose one of the topics to talk about. After they have finished, some students are picked out report their opinion to the rest of the class.

  Step 6. Language points

  (1) Secondhand ---not new or sth that has been used before

  E.g. The book I have now is a secondhand for at that time I got no enough money to afford a new one.

  Please do believe me for the information I presented before you is the firsthand news which is worth believing.

  (2) Miss (v.) ① to remember in one’s mind 

  ② lost or can’t be found any more

  ③ didn’t catch up with

  E.g. I missed my first teacher very much for it is him who helped me to realize the importance of study.

  I came back to my office after work to look for my missing key to my bike.

  Be quick or you will miss the early bus which means you will be late for school and be criticized by you teacher.

  I can’t lend my dictionary to you for it has been missed. (´)

  (3) Repay: to amend for or to give sth back to sb for what he has done (usually sth wrong, or sb has helped you before and now you want to express you appreciation.)

  E.g. Believe it or not, sooner or later I will repay you what you have helped me today.

  He is working very hard now, and I know that someday in the future the society will repay him for his great contribution to the society.

  (4) Determine -----determination ----be determined to do

  E.g. Determination is one of the most important requirements to success.

  Once he is determined to do sth, he will not stop in the middle until he really succeeded.

  (5) Left him standing (here standing is present participle used as adverbial)

  e.g. How  can you leave your child standing there crying for such a long time without doing sth to help him.

  In the past, bosses usually kept their workers working for them over 12 hours a day with very little pay.

  Step 7.Oral practice

  The T give the Ss the topic and then talk with your partner.

  Talk about the title of this passage. How do you understand it ?

  Step 8 Homework

  Review Lesson 30 .

  Retell this passage by using Indirect Speech.

  The student made a big mistake in class, so the teacher had him standing for 10 minutes to let him know about what he shouldn’t do in the period of class.

  Step 7. Retelling

  SB P45, Part 3. Tell the ss to work in pairs to tell the story to your partner using indirect speech.

  Step 8. Workbook

  Get the students to do the wb exercises individually and then check the answers with the class. Answers: See Wb P102.

  Homework

  (1) Finish off the exercises of Lesson 30 in the workbook.

  (2) Revise the key points of this lesson.
