  I. Teaching objectives

  1. The students are supposed to learn something from the little boy of his persistence in doing everything.

  2. Grammar: Revise the verb tenses

  Ⅳ.Teaching procedures:

  Step 1. Revision

  (1) Check the homework exercises.

  (2) Revise the key points of the previous lesson.

  Step 2. Leading-in

  Tell the students that this lesson will continue to tell the story about the boy that we learned in the previous lesson.

  Step 3. Reading

  Tell the students to read the text carefully and answer the questions on the workbook P103, Ex.1 of Lesson 31. Do orally with the class.

  1. What made the ship leak and fill with water?

  2. Why did the strong and able sailors want to give up pumping water out of the ship?

  3. Who changed the situation?

  4. How did the caption succeed in saving the passengers?

  5. What did he say to encourage the sailors and passengers?

  6. Was the writer sure of their success at first? How do you know?

  7. What happened to the ship and the passengers in the end?

  8.Why didn't the writer recognize the captain though he remembered the boy William Hartley very well?

  9. What can you learn from this story?

  Answer:

  1. A terrible storm.

  2. Because after pumping for one whole night, they were losing the battle against the rising water.

  3. The captain.

  4. Three times during that day he ordered the sailors and the passengers back to the pumps and encouraged them fiercely to save the ship. The Captain's courage, determination and iron will forced them to continue pumping.

  5. “I will land you safe in Liverpool,” he cried, “ if you will stay strong and firm with me.”

  6. No, he wasn't. As the captain passed the writer, he asked the captain whether there was any hope of saving the ship.

  7. In the end the captain landed the passengers safe, but the ship sank after it reached the port of Liverpool.

  8. It was some thirty years since he knew the boy.

  9. As long as we should have courage, great determination and iron will when we have difficulty in doing something, we'll succeed.

  Step 4. Language points

  Tell the students to read the text and underline the language points. Talk about the language difficulties with the students.

  (1) be on the point of doing sth: be about to do sth very soon .

  e.g. When the owner of the house came in , the thief was on the point of escaping from the window .

  Just on the point of losing the game, he made up his mind once more to continue and in he end he really succeeded.

  (2) take charge : take the power of controlling sth.

  e.g. That person isn’t fit for his office , we’d better find another  suitable person to take charge to help to increase  our factory’s production .

  (Phrases about “charge”: in charge of; in the charge of;)

  (3) will ( n.) : determination

  Where there is a will, there is a way.

  The secret of his success is his courage, determination and iron will.

  (4) double(v.) : to increase by two times

  e.g. In order to double our factory’s production , we introduced another modern production line into our factory.

  Workers’ salary was soon doubled because of the increase of the company’s production, and at the same time, workers’ working activity is also doubled.

  Step 5. Practice---- grammar revision

  SB P47, Part 2~5, Tell the students to do the exercises about the vocabulary and verb tenses in groups and tell each other why the tense is used in the situation, After they have finished, some eloquent students are asked to report to the rest of the class.

  Step 6. Practice

  Workbook Lesson 31, Ex. 2~3. Get the students to do the exercises and then check the answers with the students if time permits.

  Step 7 Homework

  1. Finish off the exercises of Lesson 31 in the workbook.

  2. Revise the grammar of verb tenses.
