Lesson 55

  Teaching aims and demands

  Learn the grammar “it” and practice “it”.

  Teaching procedures

  Step I. Revision

  1.Check the homework in the whole class.

  2.Ask a few students to retell Lesson 54.

  Step II. Grammar study

  1) Go through the Grammar study section with the class, getting students to translate the sentences. Draw attention to any difficult points suggested below.

  The use of “it”

  it既可作代词,如人称代词、指示代词及非人称代词,也可作引导词,充当形式主语或形式宾语,也可用于 “It is/was…that…”强调句型中。

  It’s her notebook. Please pass it to her.

  It’s quite difficult to find one’s family history.

  It was midnight when he heard a man crying softly.

  It’s already ten by my watch.

  It was at midnight that he heard a man crying softly.

  It’s not a long journey from Shanghai to Beijing.

  Do you consider it necessary sending more people over to help them?

  For a cold-blooded animal, it is a different matter.

  2) Point out the structure (emphatic use of it )

  It is/was + the emphasized part + that/who ….

  3) Point out that with people you can use who(m) or that.

  4) Point out that when whom / that is in the object position, it can be omitted.

  5) Point out that where cannot be used instead of that.

  Step III. Grammar practice

  Get Ss to work through the whole exercise Page 11, Part 3 in pairs. If possible, the teacher can get the Ss to read out their answers or write down on the Bb, then the teacher check the answers with the Ss at the end.

  Step IV. Practice

  Page 11, Part 3, get the Ss to rewrite the sentences. This exercise can be finish in the class as exercise.

  Step V. Exercises

  Wb Lesson 55, Exx. 1 - 2.

  Ex. 1 should be done individually and check the answers with the whole class. Get some Ss to read aloud the complete sentences.

  Ex. 2 should be done in class. Get Ss to translate the sentences into Chinese and give the answers.

  Homework

  Finish off the Workbook exercises.
