Step 1 Revision

2.Ask the students to act the story in Lesson 62.
Step 2 Read and think
Have the students look at the pictures. Ask them to read the dialogue.
Get them to understand the different meaning of the word may.
Explain the meaning of may in Picture 2 and Picture 3:
It is used to ask permission in Picture 2, while the use of may in third picture is used to express possibility.
The word can used in the sentence It can be dangerous also has the meaning of possibility.
The word can sometimes means may to ask permission, but using can isn’t as polite as using may.
Step 3 Presentation
Say I can’t find my pen. I know! It may be in my pocket! No, it isn’t. It may be on the floor! No, it isn’t. It may be in my desk! Oh yes, here it is!
Have the students repeat with other objects in the room.
Explain the meaning of may: It is used for making suggestion of possibility.
Explain the difference between may be and maybe.
Step 4 Practice
Get the students to guess the questions:
1. Where are they? -Library.
2. Who are they? -Maybe one is a student, the other is an assistant who works in the library
3. What can't he find? -He can't find his geography book.
4. Where is it? -It may be in his bag.
5. Did he find it at last? -Yes.
6. What's his response? -Ah, so it is.
Teach the new words: geography, physics, history and key.
Then ask the students to make dialogue like this:
The student can't find the library card.
A: What can I do for you?
B: I want to borrow some books. But I can't find my library card.
A: It may be in your inside pocket.
B: Ah, so it is.
Step 5 Ask and answer
Ask the students:
What are you going to do when you are older?
Help them answer: I’m not sure. May be a doctor/ a teacher …
Explain the meaning of I’m not sure.
Read the dialogues, have them work in pairs.
Step 6 Exercises in class
Ask them make dialogues like this:
A: What are you going to do tomorrow?
B: I’m not sure. I may go to the library to borrow some books.
Step 7 Homework
1. Look up the modal verb “may”.
2. Make sentences with “may”.
3. Do exercises on page 69. Finish off the workbook exercises.
Step 8 Summary
may: used to indicate possibility or probability. 用于表示“可能”“或许”
1. May I come in?
2. May I make a suggestion?
3. You may have a chance.
