Lesson 84
Teaching Objectives: 1.The Ss can use the following words: cookie cookies(pl.) 2.The Ss can use the following expressions: leave …behind It’s getting late. It’s time for sb. to do sth. 3.The Ss can use reflexive pronouns. 4.Get the Ss to master the Compound Sentence. Material analyze: The topic of this unit is She taught herself . And this is the fourth lesson of the unit. The first part of the lesson is a dialogue about offering help and thanks. In Part 2, Ss are to practise using reflexive pronouns through 3 short dialogues . Part 3 is listening practice. Part 4 is the use of the Compound Sentence. And Part 5 is writing practice. Ss are to learn to write a thank-you note after being invited to dinner or a party. So the main purpose of this lesson is to develop the Ss’ abilities of communication and writing, and master the use of the Compound Sentence. Difficult points 1. Using reflexive pronouns 2. The Compound Sentence ( and, but, so, or ) Language Focus: leave. . . behind, It’s getting late. , It’s time for sb. to do sth., thank you for doing sth. Properties: 1) a recorder 2) a projector or multi-media if possible 3) some cards and pictures 4) some real objects, such as apples, bananas, oranges, pears, cakes, eggs, cookies, coke and so on.. Teaching Procedures: Step One Warming-up 1. Greeting 2. Chatting The teacher is chatting with the Ss to revise some food words. T: What did you have for breakfast this morning? S1: I had … . T: What did you have for supper yesterday? S2: I had … . … (On the screen there are all kinds of food, drink and fruit.) Well, look at the screen, there are so many kinds of food, drink and fruit. When can we have so many kinds of food, drink and fruit? The Ss may say, “At a party.” The teacher asks the Ss, “Do you like the party?” Of course, the Ss will say, “Yes, we do.” Step Two Language input 3. Presentation Show the Ss the picture of my dinning-room on the screen and say Look, this is my home. Welcome to my home. I’d like to hold a dinner party for you. Who would like to come to the party? Then ask five Ss to the front and have a small party. T: What would you like to eat? SA: I’d like an egg. T: Here’s an egg for you. Help yourself. What would you like to eat, SB? SB: I’d like some bread. T: Here’s some bread for you. Help yourself. Would you like some cookies, SC? ( Show the Ss some cookies and also show the word cookies and the picture on the screen.) SC: Yes, please. T: I’ll get you some cookies. Here are the cookies. Help yourself. SC: Thank you. T: Would you like some cookies? SD: Yes, please. T: Here are some cookies. Help yourself. SD: Thank you. T: Would you like a drink? SE: Yes, please. T: I’ll get you some coke. Here’s the coke. Help yourself. SE: Thank you. T: Oh, here’s the fruit. Help yourselves to the fruit, children. SS: How nice! Thank you. (The clock on the wall sings. It’s 8 o’clock.) SA: I think it’s time for us to leave now. ( Help the student to say it’s time for us to leave now. And show the underlined part on the screen.) T: Do you have to? SB: Yes, I’m afraid so. It’s getting late, and we have to get up early in the morning. (Help the student to say it’s getting late, and show the underlined part on the screen.) T: (picking up a bag) Oh, whose bag is this? SC: It’s mine. T: Here you are. Don’t leave anything behind .(Explain the underlined part, it means don’t forget anything, and show it on the screen.) SC: Thanks. I think we have everything. SS: Thank you for having us. We enjoyed ourselves. T: I’m happy you did. Bye! 4. Action chain in groups Work in groups of 4 students. First each student draws a clock on a piece of paper, and then does question and answer in groups. SA: What’s the time? SB: It’s … SA: Oh, it’s getting late. It’s time for us to go home. SB: What’s the time? SC: It’s … SB: Oh, it’s getting late. It’s time for us to leave school. SC: What’s the time? SD: It’s … SC: Oh, it’s getting late. It’s time for us to … … Step Three Listening and speaking 5. Listening First, the teacher asks the Ss to shut the book and listen to the tape for the answers to the following questions: 1) Where were the children? ( At the party.) 2) Did they enjoy themselves? (Yes, they did.) 3) Did they leave anything behind? (No, they didn’t.) Then, work in pairs to discuss the answers. After the discussion, check with the tape. 6. Speaking First, play the tape again for the Ss to listen and repeat, and then have them practise reading the dialogue in groups of three, allowing them to make any change to it if they like. Choose some pairs to act before the class. 7. Group work First, Ss work in groups of four, one student invites the other five Ss to his home to have a party. They may bring out their food, drink and fruit prepared beforehand. Then choose some groups to act before the class. 8. Presentation and drill 1) After the performance, the teacher may ask the students questions like these: T: Did you enjoy yourself at the party? S1: Yes, I enjoyed myself very much. T: Did S1 enjoy himself / herself at the party? S2: Yes, he / she enjoyed himself / herself very much. T: Did you enjoy yourself at the party? S3: Yes, I enjoyed myself very much. T: Did S3 enjoy himself / herself at the party? S4: Yes, he / she did. T: S5 and S6, did you enjoy yourselves at the party? S5 and S6: Yes, we enjoyed ourselves very much. T: Did S5 and S6 enjoy themselves at the party? S7: Yes, they enjoyed themselves very much. 2) Pair work Get the Ss to practice the dialogues in Part 2 of Lesson 84 in pairs. Step Four Writing Tell the Ss, people usually write a thank-you note after the party in western countries. How to write a thank-you note? Look at Part 5 of Lesson 84. Here’s a scrambled thank-you note. It’s from Ann and Sue. Rewrite it. Show the model on the screen. Dear Han Mei, Thank you again for inviting us to your home. We really enjoyed the evening. We’ll never forget the great food! We’d like to invite you home for dinner next Friday. We hope you can come. Love, Ann and Sue Step Five Practising the use of the Compound Sentence 1. The teacher shows the following sentences chosen from the texts on the screen and asks the Ss to read them aloud and then link up each pair of sentences, using and or but. They bought her a present. She liked it very much. I turned on the TV. We sat down and watched it. Aunt Huang came in. She looked worried. We ran to the trees. We could not see any more monkeys. We bought her a present. She didn’t like it. I’ poor. I always enjoy myself. 2. Hold a competition First, ask the Ss to look at Part 4 of Lesson 84, and make as many sentences as they can in groups of four. They should write down the numbers of the sentences. Then, ask each group how many sentences they have made. The group which makes the most sentences must read out their sentences before the class, but their sentences must be all correct, or they can’t be the winner. 3. Picture talk The teacher shows some pictures on the screen and ask the Ss to talk about them. They must use the Compound Sentence with and, but, or so.( 8 pictures) Step Six Exercises in class Compete these dialogues. 1. Ann: Hello! Did you enjoy______ at the party? Twins: Yes, thanks. We enjoyed _______ very much. 2. Ann: What was wrong with Jim? Did he hurt______? Sue: A little. He fell and hit his leg on a table. But he’s all right now. 3. Lin Tao: Hello, Jim! Help ______to a piece of pie. Jim: Thanks. Lin Tao: Can I get you a drink? Jim: I can help ______. Thanks. Step Seven Homework Do Ex. 2 of WB Lesson 84 in pairs. Do Ex. 3A of WB Lesson 84 in the WB.
